Objective: In the era of the transition to a digital economy and unprecedented information density, evaluating the impact of scientific research has transcended the exclusivity of traditional citation metrics. Assessing the societal, media, and policy resonance of knowledge (altmetrics) has emerged as a strategic necessity for science policy and innovation managementThis research aimed to map the altmetric landscape and analyze the attention economy patterns, encompassing the media, social, and policy influence of scientific outputs in "Information Economics" from 2015 to 2024.
Methodology: As an applied scientometric and altmetric study, the population consisted of English-language articles indexed in Scopus. Altmetric metadata, comprising 10,514 platform mentions, were extracted from Altmetric.com. Data cleaning, preparation, and descriptive statistical analyses—including Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) evaluations, temporal dynamics, and journal performance—were conducted using Python and the Pandas library.
Findings: Results indicated that articles focusing on the tangible consequences of information asymmetry, data privacy, and platform governance achieved the highest attention scores. While the X platform (formerly Twitter) dominated media dissemination (accounting for 76.9% of total mentions), policy influence was primarily channeled through macro-level documents from international institutions such as the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The journal Management Science emerged as the most successful outlet in bridging scholarly knowledge with policy-making bodies. Furthermore, Open Access (OA) articles acted as a catalyst in attracting multi-dimensional attention.
Conclusion: Scholarly communication in information economics has transcended academic boundaries into a multi-layered structure. Although social media generates rapid public visibility, profound impact is realized through targeted influence within macro-policy documents. This highlights the necessity of aligning researchers' publishing strategies with the practical needs of the innovation ecosystem.
